Frequently Asked Questions
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Acupuncture is based on the idea that every living being possesses a vital energy called Qi (pronounced “chee”). This energy circulates throughout the body along pathways called meridians and connects to specific organs in the body.Health is determined by a balanced state of this energy, and pain and illness may occur when there is a disruption or blockage of the flow. Needles are inserted in specific points along the meridians to correct and rebalance the flow of Qi.
From a Western perspective, acupuncture appears to work by stimulating parts of the brain and body to release natural biomolecules such as neurotransmitters, vasodilators and hormones. Scientific research shows that these biomolecules trigger the immune system and pain regulating mechanisms. The exact mechanisms that bring this about are not completely understood, but the effects are measurable and documented. Studies done through Neuro-imaging, Thermal Imaging and Ultrasound prove the effects of acupuncture are beneficial.
DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
No, acupuncture does not hurt for the vast majority of people. A momentary prick is often felt around the needles as it is inserted. The needles are less than the diameter of a human hair. A dull pressure, warmth or tingling sensation is often felt during the treatment. Most people are amazed by how relaxed they feel and often fall asleep. However, if you have any anxiety about your treatment, please inform us and we will go at your own pace or find an alternative method of treatment for you. Due to the effectiveness of acupuncture, most patients agree that the benefits of receiving acupuncture outweigh any initial concerns they may have had.
IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
As long as it is performed by a licensed professional, acupuncture is extremely safe. All acupuncturists in Florida are required to use individually packaged, sterile, single-use disposable needles so there is virtually no chance of infection or contagion. Every licensed acupuncturist also receives extensive training in anatomy so to avoid inserting a needle in a place that can cause damage.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
This is unique to the individual. Many conditions are alleviated very rapidly by acupuncture. However, conditions that have arisen over many years require a longer course of treatment. It may be recommended that you receive treatment 1-3 times a week depending your condition. As in any form of healing, the patient’s attitude and participation affects the outcome of a course of treatments. Often herbs are prescribed and dietary, exercise and lifestyle changes are recommended.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A TREATMENT?
Please try to wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing for your appointment if possible. Patients typically remain clothed during their treatment. However, linens are always available if partial disrobing is required. Please eat a few hours before your treatment so as not to be too hungry or too full for your session.Lastly, it is best to refrain from caffeine, alcohol and strenuous physical activity following acupuncture.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Oriental Medicine uses an intricate system of pulse and tongue diagnoses, palpation of points and meridians, complete medical history and other signs and symptoms to create an Oriental Medical diagnosis. A treatment plan is formulated to induce the body to a balanced state of health. After the needles are carefully placed in specific areas of the body developed by the treatment plan, they will remain in place anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.
